Its massive application has led to the contamination of water and soil, and disruption of biogeochemical cycles, resulting in a risk to the ecological balance.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"4\" cellpadding=\"4\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><b>OBJECTIVES<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>The general objective<\/b> of the project is to study the distribution of chlorpyrifos in water, sediment and organisms, and migration of chlorpyrifos in surface water samples using \u201egreen\u201d analytical methods<\/p>\n<p><b>Specific objectives: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>development, implementation and validation of rapid, \u201cgreen\u201d ecological, advanced and cost-effective analytical methods for the extraction of chlorpyrifos from surface water, sediment and organisms: Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) and Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME), prior to quantitative determination;<\/li>\n<li>use of high performance chromatographic techniques: gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD);<\/li>\n<li>determination of chlorpyrifos levels in surface water, sediment and organisms samples;<\/li>\n<li>assessment of the migration, distribution, accumulation, persistence and transformation (metabolism) of chlorpyrifos in surface water in the studied areas;<\/li>\n<li>results disseminated by scientific papers and conference presentations;<\/li>\n<li>patent proposal for the \u201dgreen\u201d analytical methods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td height=\"15\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><b>DESCRIPTION<\/b><\/td>\n<td>Chlorpyrifos [O,O-diethyl O-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)-phosphorothioate] is one of the most widely used organophosphate pesticides. Its massive application has led to the contamination of water and soil, and disruption of biogeochemical cycles, resulting in a risk to the ecological balance. Because chlorpyrifos is present in the environment at trace levels, it is necessary to use very selective extractions and sensitive quantitative analysis methodologies. The project <b>MIRYOS<\/b> aims to be a response to the problems related to classical techniques of sample preparation, laborious, time and reagent consuming. The project would assure also the improvement of analytical methods for determination of chlorpyrifos in environmental samples, by elaboration, development, implementation and validation of \u201cgreen\u201d methods, such as Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) and Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME), which are rapid, cost-effective and very selective, and also instrumental techniques, such as gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
