Objectives:
The polyphenols and metals from fruits have an important role in maintaining a good function of the organism. The benefic or negative role of these compounds on the organism is given by the concentration level in which they are found in fruits. The concentration level is strongly influenced by the cultivation area, grower, the pollution level in the area, environmental factors and other less important factors.

OBJECTIVES General objective

  • Development of modern multi-component analytic techniques at low detection levels in order to determine some polyphenols (catechin, epicatechin and quercetin) and heavy metals from apples and pears and corresponding leaves and blossom leaves produced in Romania and Austria.

Specific objectives

    • Establishing the metals and polyphenols to be studied, from apples, pears and corresponding leaves and blossom leaves;
    • Establishing the sampling site of the samples to be studied; Development and implementation in ICIA’s laboratories of some multicomponent analytical methods for the selected metals with ICP-MS and ICP-OES and for selected polyphenols with HPLC and LC/MS/MS;
    • Development and implementation of appropriate extracting methods for apples, pears and corresponding leaves and blossom leaves to be analyzed;
    • The sampling of apples, pears and corresponding leaves and blossom leaves and their analysis by analytical methods which were developed earlier;
    • Statistical analysis of the obtained results;
    • Comparing the results obtained from both partner teams.

DESCRIPTION The polyphenols and metals from fruits have an important role in maintaining a good function of the organism. The benefic or negative role of these compounds on the organism is given by the concentration level in which they are found in fruits. The concentration level is strongly influenced by the cultivation area, grower, the pollution level in the area, environmental factors and other less important factors. However there are few data regarding the concentration level of of these compounds in fruits, for some areas no data are available regarding this aspect. Estimated advantages of the project are:

  • Obtaining a complex informational support regarding the concentration level of the interest compounds and also the factors that influence it, an important desideratum for rehabilitating the eco-systems and protecting the environment quality;
  • Monitoring and evaluating the concentration level of interest compounds are high current requirements for accomplishing an efficient and durable resources management by which the environment quality and the public health can be enhance;
  • Accomplishing a solid partnership which will help the formed research team to extend its knowledge in the field and later using this knowledge in the frame of other studies or research projects;
  • Developing the analytical chemistry skills of the project’s team in de field in and its application in environment problems.
RESULTS ESTIMATED
  • Documentation of the elements and compounds to be analyzed and their occurrence in fruits at national and international level;
  • Report on establishing the sampling areas;
  • Catalog of the compounds which follows to be study function of their category, geographical area and climatic conditions;
  • Web page;
  • Report on multicomponent analytical methods for determining the polyphenols and metals from fruits;
  • Report on extraction methods for polyphenols and metals from leaves, blossom leaves and fruits;
  • Report on implementing the analytical protocols in ICIA’s laboratories;
  • Report on monitoring the polyphenols and metals function of their evolution stage (leaves, blossom leaves and fruits);
  • Report on comparative study of polyphenols and metals function of their evolution stage (leaves, blossom leaves and fruits);
  • Report on comparative study of the results obtained in both countries;
  • Report on interpretation of the obtained results.
