Objectives:
the investigation of the correlation between medical variables (the type and the gravity of the periodontal defect, the tooth type, the gingivo-periodontal phenotype) and the psychological ones (the types of cognitions, the level of distress, the expectancies);
the improvement of a therapeutic algorithm centered on the patient;
the calculation of the success rate of surgical procedures;

DESCRIPTION | Recent studies revealed a correlation between psychological factors (the psychological aspect of pain, stress, beliefs, anxiety) and the cognitive factors (irrational cognitions) that were proven to have a significant impact on the results of several types of illnesses. The effect of distress on preoperatory and postoperatory evolution may be managed by the personality style of the patient, by his/her expectation to the intervention’s results and also, by the coping mechanisms that the person mobilizes. The behavior interventions had positive effects on some subjective indicators, as distress, and also, on some objectives ones, as the postoperatory recovery. Because these reasons, the psychological therapy became an essential component in many medical domains, including surgical therapy. The surgical treatment of severe periodontal illnesses that involve a massive destruction of the supporting tissues and the periodontal plastic surgical techniques having in view the root coverage of gingival recessed areas, are often in current practice. The common goal of these interventions is the obtention of periodontal regeneration in the destruction areas, that unfortunately is not a predictable phenomenon. The research of some local and behavioral factors that may interfere the post-surgical healing may find evidences about the interference of molecular and cellular mechanisms by psychosocial environment. Avoiding these factors may increase the therapeutic results of the surgery as the periodontal regeneration and the contentment of the patients.The aim of this project is to elaborate a preoperatory cognitive behavioral psychological intervention for the management of distress and pain associated with periodontal surgical techniques.The first objective of PSIDENT is to validate a diagnostic and treatment guide for the evaluation and psychological intervention for reducing the pain and distress associated with periodontal surgical procedures, in order to increase the success rate of the interventions and the quality of life. |
